Landscape artist Royce Roberts turned in his barber shears for a paintbrush in the early 1970's, and he's been painting ever since. A working barber, Roberts embarked on his art career when his wife gave him a set of oils for his 25th birthday. For years Roberts combined his barber career with his painting by using his barbershop as a gallery for his works. After being featured on the television show "Eyes of Texas" he was discovered by a gallery that offered to buy all he could paint. Roberts locked the door on his barbershop and became a full time artist. Born April 5th 1928 in Hope, Arkansas, Roberts moved to Houston in 1948 after his discharge from the United States Navy. He is best known for his Texas landscapes and scenes of the Hill Country. Roberts captures the beauty of Texas in spring, summer and fall, but his paintings of bluebonnets come alive, giving viewers the sense of sitting right in the middle of the gorgeous blossoms. Roberts and his wife spent so much time traveling to the bluebonnets, they decided in 1977 to buy a small ranch outside of Austin. Roberts has his studio in a barn in the midst of countryside that provides him with his greatest inspiration. Roberts has twice won the Silver award at the Texas Rangers Hall of Fame Show. His paintings hang in homes and businesses from one end of Texas to the other, and two of his paintings were presented to Texas Governor Preston Smith when he left office. His work also has been featured on the cover of the Independent Cattlemen's Association magazine twice, and has been on telephone book covers in Waco, Wichita Falls and Temple. Roberts is listed in the important reference work on current Texas artists: Artists of Texas Volume II. |
